The generosity of Doug and Mary Bruce has left a lasting mark on Greater Des Moines -- making an indelible impact that is celebrated both with gratitude and sadness following Mary’s April 21 death due to cancer.

The organizations the Bruces have lifted up over the years are among the many beneficiaries of Mary’s caring legacy.

The Bruces became involved with Blank Children’s Hospital’s Festival of Trees & Lights in 2015 and served as the event’s Honorary Chairs in 2020; they also made a leadership gift to the STAR & Developmental Center and have played a critical role in advancing the hospital’s Child Life program.

In 2016, the Bruces also began supporting John Stoddard Cancer Center’s Rally Against Cancer with financial support, advocacy, and outreach – including to the Center’s oncology navigator program. Even while going through Mary’s cancer journey, the couple worked to ensure others received the best treatment and care.

Other organizations that have benefitted from the Bruces’ boundless generosity include the Food Bank of Iowa, EveryStep Care & Support Services, West Des Moines Public Library, and Drake University. In 2018, Doug was recognized as one of the six exceptional alumni with awards for professional achievement and loyalty to Drake.

“Give where you live” was a guiding principle for Mary Bruce throughout her life. “Just do it,” Mary told DSM magazine. “Write the check. Give your time. It doesn’t have to be a huge amount.”
